You can now have OnStar service in any vehicle with the OnStar rear-view mirror! I guess if you wanted OnStar on your lawnmower, all you'd have to do is install this bad boy. $299 for the mirror, and $199/year for the service.I've been reading about this, and it's a good concept - but it could be better. Why doesn't it have output triggers for relays, so you could have remote car disable, remote door unlocking, etc. Any knowledgeable shop/person would be able to integrate those features into the vehicle if the mirror had the relay outputs to do this. If the... mirror had those outputs, I'd buy it, and the service. What good is the theft recovery if all they can do is track your vehicle? Turn your car/truck into a pile of twisted metal after a wreck from the high-speed pursuit that ensues when the thief tries to run? A data port for vehicle diagnostics wouldn't be too bad either. It's easy to read OBDII data, and even the limited amount of OBDI data would be helpful. Not expecting the full OnStar vehicle diagnostics, but with OBDI you could at least get trouble codes. With newer OBDII vehicles you can get a whole bunch more. Pre-computer controlled vehicles though; you're just out-of-luck. I'll wait until they improve the product. Until then I'll stick with my GPS enabled cell phone & AAA membership. The mirror has a built-in accelerometer to detect a crash. It then automatically notifies a live operator who can call emergency responders. Users can press a red button for advice in emergency situations. They also get turn-by-turn navigation, stolen vehicle assistance, and roadside assistance. the idea is cool, but like most good ideas, the first run at it probably wont be the best.

Cool idea.. But I've gotta agree with Chris... The reasons I like OnStar are for the remote unlocking, vehicle disabling, etc..

Ehh, wouldn't want that.
A car shouldn't have any drivers aid. Just you the steering wheel and the pedal. Oh and maybe sometimes the brake.

So have I. Power steering a nice feature to have. Now my 1965 chevy corvair that had no power steering or brakes. Was fun.
Steering felt light and was pleasurable to drive. The brakes sucked tho.

I've driven a 65 ruststang. It was a base inline 6 convertible. It's a slow car. So slow in fact you didn't need brakes.

lol mine was a four wheel drum, no PS V8, but the smaller one. it was kinda fast. cuz it was gutted, had a 4 barrel carb, some cool exhaust and an edlebrok intake manifold. i probably spelled some shit wrong, but honestly who buys edlebrock?

I'd imagine with a V8 with some aftermarket parts would beat a inline 6.
Pretty sure the one I drove was drums all the away around. I have an great uncle that worked for Ford in the 1950s to 1980s. He designed some of the first rotor and caliper brakes that ford used.
