really? when did they stuff the 3.4 in there?
After somewhere a GM engineer was tilting back his chair, slipped and banged his head off the wall. Then stood up and slammed his head repeatedly against the wall. Then he said "I KNOW THE NEW ENGINE FOR THE GRAND PRIX! Screw the 3800, thats too high quality of an engine, lets put the 3.4 DOHC in it!"

It was in '90 when they introduced the 3.1 N/A and '91 when they introduced the 3.4, and the 3.4 isn't that bad of a motor. As long as you keep up with the maintainance of it, they're fine...just like any other engine, they have their own little issues that should be addressed. They had a few design flaws, like the alternator placement and such, but nothing is perfect

Like I said...they have their issues, but it's nothing that can't be fixed. They are a bitch to work on, but it's the nature of the beast. And I do infact have a mechanic that will work on my car. He probably won't like it, but he'll do it. He's one smart SOB and he knows exactly what he's doing...and he lives an hour away from me, but I'll gladly drive all that way to have him work on my stuff. There's not any good mechanics at ALL in Duluth, MN...and that's sad becuase it's a pretty big city.

Nice grab. Makes me really miss mine. How did this turn into an argument about the 3.4? change the rear plugs? pick, destroy the firewall seal, or take off the UIM?
that wasn't the case until '94 and besides, I got to the point on my 96 where it was actually easier for me to take the UIM off and change that plugs than it was to change the rear plugs on my 98 riviera. Once you get used to the engine, it's pretty easy. The engine design is pretty simple when you get down to it and it's not very hard to work on. I know it may sound insane to some, but I'll take working on a 3.4 over a 3100 or 3800 any day. Anyway, enough arguing about that. I love 3.4's. Mechanics that can't work on them aren't worth shit and if you know what you're doing, you can make a lot of money working on them, because you can do things a lot faster than the book says.

Damn...why couldn't be like my neighbor or something? Shit...I'd let you work on my car for free! Well I went to Advance Auto Parts today and picked up some Trico Neoform wiper blades (very nice...had them on my Neon) and an AC Delco fuel filter for the GP. When I got home, I came apon these sitting at my doorstep: These things are insane! I just skimmed through them and there is so much information, it boggles my mind! I only paid $25 shipped for all 3 of them on eBay, which is a good price I must say.

Yea I dunno why they delayed the 3.1 into other cars, the Pontiac 6000 STE AWD was the first car to get the 3.1 in 1988 and 89. If you get the 3.4 Dohc you should really have some experience with engines or taking it to the mechanic (lol im glad i NEVER have to say that im in school to be the mechanic) will cost a shitload more than most of our poor cars are worth!

Yesterday I took the the car and parked it at my mechanic's shop until he can take a look at it on Wednesday. I live an hour away, so I had to do it while I was down visiting my parents in Willow River. Anyways, I told him to go over everything (engine, trans, brakes, fuel system, etc.) and check everything and write down what ever needs replacing and make a quote/estimate on what it will cost to get it done. I'm hoping the "missing" is an easy fix in the ignition (runs on 3 cylinders on and off), but I'm fearing the worst when it comes to the timing belt...at 171,xxx it's probably due. I guess we'll see come Wednesday...
