So I think I have a stuck lifter in the Regal. I did some research on Hydraulic lifters, and everything seems to make sense so far. I have a tapping noise in the engine that's been there for the last 20k some miles. I don't exactly remember when it got there; I just remember hearing it. Its not really audible at idle, but the moment you rev even slightly, you can hear the ticking. Since I've replaced the valves, the lifters are the last bits that could be at fault here.

How would I go about fixing this problem? I just dumped a can of seafoam into my crankcase (with 1500 miles on the oil) in hopes that this might alleviate the problem. Does anyone have any other suggestions? The engine also recommends 10W30, but I'm using 5W30. Should I try using a heavier grade oil? Or is my only option to replace all of the lifters? Is there a way to figure out which one is bad or stuck? These things are about $10 each, so I'd prefer not to have to replace all 12 of them.

Any help would be appreciated.

I posted in your other thread, but Oil additives are an option, they help the lifters hold thier prime, not nessesarily sticking. If that wont do, you can replace all of the lifters, My 6k made a loud lifter noise, I blew a headgasket, and when i took it apart, on lifter was in peices! I replaced that one because thier 12$ a pop and i just couldnt afford it. It was quiet for a while, now the noise is coming back...but i have a flat tappet cam so i would need a new cam too, not sure if thats worth it on a 240k engine

I changed my oil last night with 3 quarts synthetic blend 10W-30 and 1 quart Rislone Engine Treatment, which was very highly regarded on the Dakota forums for loosening stuck lifters. If that doesn't fix it within the 3000 miles for this oil change, I'm buying new lifters.

Well, I have some good news, so far. The vibration has lessened a bit, and now I can no longer hear any lifter tapping up to 2000 rpm, and I can't hear much past that because of the exhaust noise. The powerband also seems to feel more even, and the engine is overall quieter. Interesting considering that Rislone engine treatment is designed to clean out everything. I'm hoping the lifters were just clogged and not actually worn. I'll try to rev it from under the hood later since I can only rev so loud in my work's parking lot without looking like a tool.

10 weight being thicker is going to absorb more of the vibrations and noise too, so IF its still got the problem, this might just mask it.

That's quite the contrary from what the bottle actually says. Its supposed to loosen all the crap, not gunk it up more.

Was it blue colored liquid? its not quite AS thick as lucas, but put some on your fingers, its sticks to your fingers like crazy, have to actually go wash your hands, wiping it off doesnt seem to get the sticky/greasy off your hands. Thats what most of those "engine savers" or life extenders do, it doesnt clog anything, just coats everything so they are always lubricated, no dry starts and all that. It probbably jus thas lot more cleaning agents, anti-wear additives and all that jazz.

yea looks like the second ones just the same as the first, just full of cleaning agents. Both increase oil film thickness. Seems it may be better, it doesnt alter oil viscosity like lucas mosty likley does.

It was slightly blue colored. I've used solid blue engine treatments before, but this only had a light blue tint to it.

Something interesting happened. I just went to lunch half an hour ago. Started the car, went to a place to eat, everything was fine. Finished eating, got back in the car, started it, SES code, but everything else felt fine. Got to work, shut the car off, restarted it, and SES Code was gone. I'll check for history codes when I get home.

Similar thing happened 2 days ago, but ignored it. I was leaving for the day, and the car threw an SES code the moment I turned it on. Tried to restart it 3 times, SES code stayed on. Drove for 2 miles, shut the car down and started it again, SES code was gone and stayed gone till today.
