So the STE motor's been sitting in the garage for a few months w/ no topend on it, just some plastic sheeting over the top. I take a look at it yesterday and boom.. cylinder 1 is 1/4 covered in surface rust.

Am I going to have to remove the piston and rehone it?

how far down is the piston in the hole?

turn it so it goes down farther,  get some scotch brite pads and oil em up,  and clean it.  provided it's typical light cylinder surface rust, you'll be fine.

well that piston is literally at the bottom of it's stroke, rust goes about halfway down. I'll try the scotch brite pads, I couldn't really think of anything I could use on the walls but that should be mild enough. Thanks much Pat.

Not to hijack this thread, but my car hasn't been started in a little over year, but mine is sealed. How screwed could I be?

Tony

maybe remove the oil pump gear at the Dist o-ring and spin it with a drill to prime the oiling system before you fire it up.

however i dunno but getting at that on the 3.4 is a major undertaking if i recall?? never had one so i dunno.

Yeah, you really can't get to it.

I'm not worried about "priming" the oiling system. If these engines sit for a month or two the oil completely drains out of the heads and the lifters clank for 10-15 min till they fill up with oil again.

My question is more of since the engine has sat, what are the chances that I've developed rust inside the combustion chambers?

you'll be fine.  if you're that worried shoot some PB blaster through the spark plug holes.

my caddy sat for 10 years before i got it in a barn,  and all i did was put a new starter on and i've been driving it for 3 years.
