I am going to fix a friends 1998 Chevy Monte Carslo with the 3100.

She needs to get the car back on the road, but it fails inspection.  The SES light is on.

She took the car to autozone and had them pull the codes for me.  I looked them up in my 1996 GM book, but one of the codes is not covered.

Code 1 is P0401 - EGR insufficient flow

Code 2 is P0442 - long listed in my GM book.

The printout they gave her says that P0442 is for the EVAP system (leak), but I want a GM book to confirm this.

If anyone has a 1998 book can they look it up for me?

I don't have the car yet.  I might pick it up over the weekend.

She really needs to get her car back on the road, and she is a really sweet lady.

Thanks guys.

Code 1 - clean the EGR and passeges, clear code. If it pops back on, expect to put a new EGR on it.. Very common issue

Code 2 - Evap leak small. Get it on a smoker and find the leak. Normally not a gas cap (typically throws a P0440) expect to find a issue with the charcoal canister or the lines, and even more likely, a filler neck issue.

I got to thinking that the EVAP code might be a broken vacuum line.  It looks like one of them was touching the EGR.

I will get the car next week, and check it then.
