So, my car wont start. its reading that it has 12.02 volts, and the starter tries to turn, but it sounds like something hammers to a stop. it almost sounds like a dead battery but louder.
someone told me he thinks my connecting rod is broken. how would that happen from driving to shut off, then try to start and no go?i drove it last night, and its got a small coolant leak, so ive been keeping an eye on it over the last couple days because i didnt have time to work on it. (and in total over 2 days i havent put in 4L of premixed coolant yet) so today i went to start it to drive from the front to the back where the gay-rage is to work on my car in the cold and fix the stoopid coolant leak (the 3" long rubber hose connecting the UIM to the metal hose running from the water pump has a pin hole leak in it) so, what can stop a car from starting that hasnt had a problem ever and now all of a sudden it wont even turn. i thought maybe weak cold battery so i tried to boost it but beyond that and wiggling the wires on the starter while having someone turn the key, and me trying to tap it too with a ratchet * not hammer on it, just TAP it. but it was engaging anyhow. so i dunno. what else can i check?
Post Merge: February 06, 2010, 06:03:57 PM so, she goes. but im not sure why the starter wouldnt go. i usually plug it in, but what would freeze on it that wouldnt let it start? i had it plugged in for about 5 hours before it would turn over today, and it still didnt start untill i floored it while turning the key... but even then, it was cranking over... and didnt need a boost. Optima Batteries FTW
Post Merge: February 07, 2010, 12:56:29 AM fuck i hate stupid problems, car didnt start because of BOTH grounds on the battery side were lose. fucking shit. little hose under upper intake is fixed. car is driving nice, also, i noticed the old gasket from the manifold was cracked in a couple places already. gasketmaker FTW

nah, tighten battery posts. loud clicking was starter solonoid engaging but taking too much power for the insufficient ground to actually turn the motor.

This issue can also be caused by corroded battery wiring. There are 4 big wires you need to replace on these cars after a while, the battery to block ground, battery to chassis ground, battery to aux, and battery to starter. Make sure those are all in excellent condition or the car simply won't start. I used an audio distribution block to manage all of these wires as the OEM style electric clamps were trash. I also replaced all of those wires with 0/1 gauge wiring.

So I'm guessing the loose grounds solved the problem?

haha yeah. stupid people make stupid problems and other stupid people overlook them... so... it was a combination effort that once again tells me, never let anyone help work on your car. do it all yourself. friends are near useless except to pass wrenches.

Except when you're swapping engines, transmissions, or bench pressing a subframe, you're quite right.

Yeah but it sure does go faster if you have someone to help you, especially on a Jag V12 engine with a Turbo 400.

Scroll up. I replaced 4 if you include the battery to starter wire. This issue can also be caused by corroded battery wiring.
