Hey guys, I recently had my W-Body Muncie 5-speed (HM-282) rebuilt at the local transmission shop.  It was about a $1,300 job, so obviously I want to take care of what's inside the case now.

I'm about to have it put into the car, and need to fill it with a good quality manual transmission fluid. After reading some of the forums, I find myself questioning what I should and shouldn't be using in it.

Since birth, I've been told to use 70 or 80W gear oil in manual transmissions.  However, the newer GM fluid is more like an ATF or 5W-30 with additives.  That costs $17 a bottle - WTF GM?!  I find it hard to believe that GM is using this swill for manual transmissions, but apparently that's what they're using now.

So what type of Manual Transmission Fluid should used in a 1988-1993 W-Body?

Most transmission that give problems break. They don't wear out.
Find out what the current specification for your transmission is. '
You can always used the original specification gear oil or anything that supersedes it.

Keep the GM syncromesh fluid in it and make sure it doesnt leak or youll be rebuilding it again. It should be good for 70-100k till you should think about a drain and refill. Many many manual transmissions take 5w-40 motor oil, ATF, or synthetic only gear lube. Actually gear lubes hardly used anymore but in trucks and a few cars.

yep, the syncromesh, which no, isn't very cheap, but it's quality shit. Like above mentioned, you can go upwards of 100K without having to change it. My '92 half ton chevy pickup with almost 300K has the original 5spd on it and we've been changing it with the syncromesh!

Thanks guys, I'll be buying that syncromesh fluid next weekend!

After talking with the transmission shop, they gave me the GM PN 12345349, just in case any of you might need it in the future!
