damn fuel pump went out in the Cutlass today :? i'm ordering a Walbro 255 today and replacing it ASAP. the car has been a bit hard to start lately (i thought it was probably just the COLD weather we've had lately) but now it won't even rev past 3000 RPM in neutral or it will studder/buck BADLY. any boost at all even below 3000 RPM and same thing. i brought the car home immediately and put it in the garage to get ready to drop the tank tomarrow. after i parked it and shut the engine off i popped the hood and pressed in on the schrader valve test port on the fuel rail - NO fuel came out at all. i haven't actually tested fuel pressure at idle yet but i think the problem is obviously the fuel pump. hopefully the Walbro gets here quick!
i'll be doing a writeup and get pics of the process. i've had the tank out twice before so it'll be easy. i'm just glad this happened before i went out to Minnesota to sell the car to Shawn (that is if he buys the car of course). that would have sucked if he were stranded with a dead fuel pump while heading back to Ohio!

Have fun. I did mine back in June just after I washed/waxed it. I finished cleaning the interior then was going to take off to the liquor store and it wouldn't start. I wanted to punch it. Anyway, I painted my gas tank while it was out since I had to have it out overnite I figured it wouldn't hurt. So now it's gloss black.

yeah, i sent him 45 pics of the car but he hasn't gotten back to me yet. meanwhile i think i've found another car. i'd really rather trade straight across than sell my Cutlass outright. so i'm actually hoping that works out instead. i'm just waiting on detailed pics of the car (should have them by tomarrow) and if i don't hear back from dbtk2 by then i'm going to work a trade deal with this other guy....so long as i like what i see in the pics. it's a CLEAN '92 Bonneville SSEi with 119,xxx miles, white on tan leather interior. just what i'm looking for Walbro 255 HP fuel pump is on the way! i can't wait to get started on that

I've seen the mechanics at work spray the rubberized undercoating (in a can) on new gastanks. I'm sure putting something on it would be a good idea since they have rust problems. I wish they made plastic tanks for our cars. I've been through 2 tanks... one on my 88 and on my current car. Cost me less than $200 for tank/labor so I didn't bother to do the work myself.

Yeah, mine had some rust spots on it. I just cleaned and sanded the thing, then primered, then gloss black. All rattle can stuff. I had nothing else to do and had plenty of spray paint.

I wish they made plastic tanks for our cars. The Impy has a plastic tank (I can't say for sure if all 2G's have them, though.) Might be worth it to scrounge one up from a boneyard and compare it to your tank. You never know, it just might fit into a 1G...

most tanks its a bad idea to paint them as the promote condensation under the paint which can lead to problems, granted it would take years for those things to rust through. Best bet is to put some sort of grease on the seams of the tank, as thats where the usually rust out and cause leakage. Undercoat is also known to cause problems up here in NY for creating leaks in gas tanks. I changed the tank in my blazer a couple years ago. All that stuff gets up on top and between the frame and the tank and eats away at it. Anyway, my two cents, do as you will.

i suppose that would be a good idea, but seriously, on a w-body paying that much to have that shit baked on is not necessarily feasible. Those tanks are what, 16 gal? You'd pay twice as much to coat it as you pay for the tank.

i'm probably going to POR-15 the tank since my brother has about a 1/2 gallon left, along with that Metal Ready etching stuff.

Have fun! I changed the pump in my '93 back in 2005, it made it to something like 240,000 miles. Pretty easy job IMO.

Pretty easy job IMO. yeah i've done it twice before, no biggie. i ran the car until it completely ran out of gas last night just to make the job easier. the first time i did it i had almost a full tank of gas and the fuel pump was completely dead, so i couldn't run the pump to drain the fuel and of course there is no way to siphon it out. that was a bitch!

oh yeah, the problem seems to be intermittent :? sometimes it's just fine but most of the time it just cuts out at 3k RPM like it's hitting a rev limiter. it always happens right at 3k RPM. but then sometimes it doesn't happen and feels completely normal climbing right up to redline still pulling hard llke it used to. wtf. i checked for codes again and still nothing.
oh i tested the fuel pressure at idle and it was @ 36psi. well i'm changing the pump anyway - i've been meaning to get a Walbro 255 pump installed forevever now and it's on they way here already anyway.
