Ok, so I'm bringing my '92 GP to my mechanic next week to get a full look-over and make sure everything is okay. I was telling a friend of mine at work everything I'm going to have him do while he's looking at it...told her I was going to do an oil change, replace plugs/wires, and flush the transmission and put all-new fluid in, since I don't know when the last owner changed it and the car has 171,xxx on the clock. She gets all wide-eyed and says "DON'T FLUSH THE TRANNY! It's so bad for the transmission if you don't know the past maintenance of the vehicle! I would advise anyone not to EVER do that!" And I remembered that I was told on the forum to do EXACTLY that...flush the trans and put new GM Synchromesh fluid in. I told her that, and she said "anyone who knows anything about cars should know that you NEVER do that!"

So basically I'm here to see if she's full of shit, or if there is some actual truth to it...since I've never heard anything like that until now.

I was told that the fluid should be changed in 50 to 100 thousand mile intervals, regardless unless the fluid is being burned.

Well I figure it can't hurt anything...and I'm not sure if all 5-speed W-Body cars do this, but the car makes a "whining" sound when the car accelerates. My Neon kinda did that, so I'm guessing it's normal.

no way would i flush a tranny w/ those miles.  Just change the fluid normally.  It's worse for an auto trans, but defintely not necessary.  If the fluid looks bad, just change it a couple times in a limited number of miles.  Just use some good ol' GM syncromesh or the Amsoil equivalent.

Oh, okay...I shouldn't have said "flush"...I should have said "change"...I'm just wanting to change the fluid.

IT WILL KILL THE TRANNY TO CHANGE THE FLUID!!! (if) it smells burned.

if its just dirty, changing it will help the transmission shift smoother.

God everybody shut up, lol, its a MANUAL TRANSMISSION not an auto, (if it was an auto i would flush it regardless, ot at least drop the pan and change the filter, your a fool if you listen to these wives tales of filter changeing and flushing killing a trans, if its slipping DUH nothings gonna help, its like saying dont change your oil if it hasnt been done in a long time, oil looses lubricating properties, weather its GM syncromesh, Dexron 3 or motor oil, so change it. Wont flush a trans with those miles, iv done plenty with well over 150 and my personal cars 220k trans goign from harsh shifting to smooth perfect shifts, its called PREVENTATIVE maintence not omg i never did it for 150k and its slipping and the fluids black now lets flush it.....dumb....)

Yes change the fluid, 90% of people never do anything to manuals untill its grinding and making awful noises, so yes change it, nothing will hurt it.

Speaking of which... My car is at 93,000 and some change and I don't know if the tranny fluid/filter has ever been changed. I think I'm gonna get it done when it goes for inspection in March. Question though is... anyone know the shift points for the transmission in my car (4T60E i guess?)? Reason I ask is because it seems like it takes longer than it should to shift... only slightly. It still hits all gears just fine, just seems like it revs a little high and then shifts kind of noticeably. Is that normal? Throw a quart of Lucus in the next time I need fluid? Or change the whole thing and hope for the best? The transmission is FAR from gone, I know that... but don't know what I should do to preserve it.

they're not wives' tales.  My dad's partner has been rebuilding GM transmissions for 25 years.   not going to get into this anymore AGAIN

you dont kill it if its slipping, but if you change burned trans fluid youre fuckin retarded man. ask any trans shop or tech. this isnt a wives tale. its truth, if its slipping, youre probably low.

yea, i've been a mechanic for a while and i would NOT flush an AUTO with that many  miles, now a 5speed, yea i would change the fluid. I know the getrag's are pretty complicated, but as far as the side conversation with automatics, if it's ANY color other than PURE red, i don't mess with them, especially if it smells burned or is slipping.

Each gear in an Auto has it's own clutch...when it gets burned fluid it's breaking it down, and the gears are getting pretty smooth/glazed...you put in new fluid (tranny fluid is quite abrasive) it TEARS up the gears, and depending how burnt the fluid already was or how bad it was slipping...you'll be needing a new tranny in a matter of a few thousand miles....and i'm speaking from personal experience in my own vehicle (notice, it's NOT plural) as well as MANY MANY others!

are you refering to the TGP?  which are known for burning up their clutches, anyhow???
