if you dont know when it was last tuned up, then do it, i mean AC delco Plugs and a set of NEW Wires. Dont waste your time with doing one plug and one wire, it will happen to the next one and the next one.

Agreed, and x2 on the acdelco plugs. Go with acdelco wires too, don't buy some cheap ass $20 autozone crap.

why would someone replace one wire/plug? that just sounds as stupid as replacing the brakes on one side, or repacing one tire (with a different brand) or painting half the car, for no reason. lol

You'd be surprised dude, I was talking to my buddy about this today. There are a few people here at the dealer that if a car comes in with like 140K, and a check engine light on for a misfire on cylinder 4 (and has original plugs/wires) they'll just fix that one cylinder to fix the problem and let it go...amazes me

So, now that it finally wasn't 95 degrees outside with a "feels like" temperature of 105 degrees for the first weekend since I had the car, I finally got to play with the misfire problem.

**DRUM ROLL**

It was the heat shield on the plug wire for the #6 cylinder.  Instead of replacing it, the last person who changed the wires just took the old heat shield and mangled it with a pair of pliers in order to make it clamp onto the new plug wire.  The plug wire was in place and felt tight, but it was not making full contact with the plug.

The car now runs great!

I also had a friend of a friend, in exchange for some PC repair work, put some freon in the A/C today.  When he went to fill it, he saw immediately that the valve on high pressure side had a little rubber ball in it (check ball?) that was dry rotted and the valve was just spitting the freon back out.  He had a new valve in and some freon in it within 20 minutes and she was blowing cold for the first time in 2 or 3 years.  Now we'll just have to see if it holds.

Thanks, everyone, for all your help.

1.3.5 are the back 2.4.6 is front , so 6 would be the last cyl on drivers side next to the bel housing. they use a waste spark on theses motors, so 1,4  2,5 and 3,6 are paired together

Well, if 5 is the cylinder closest to driver's side in the back of the engine bay, that's the plug I took the shield off of.  But that also cleared the code, which was misfire on #6.  Autozone's computer system list the cylinder closest to the driver as #6
