So, on my first day driving the car the "Service Engine Light" came on (which I was warned might happen) when I gave it more than just a regular amount of gas.
I had to get across two lanes of traffic, so I hustled the Buick and then one cylinders started not firing and the "Service Engine Soon" light came on, flashing. I eased off the gas, drove it regularly, the misfire stopped and the light went from flashing to steady. I pulled over, turned the car off and then started it again. It fired fine, but the light stayed on solid.
Advance Auto Parts diagnosed it as a misfire on Cylinder 6.
1- Does anyone have the firing pattern for this motor, so I know which one is Cylinder 6? The Hanes manual doesn't seem to have it for this motor (amongst other things it doesn't have for the 3800).
2- Has anyone had this problem before? My friend thinks maybe it's the coil pack, but I was going to pull the plug tonight and see if maybe it's fouled or gapped wrong before I go buying coil packs.
Any thoughts?

My girlfriend's car has a 3800, and it's had a misfire on cyl 3 since she bought it from the dealer. I replaced the coil packs and wires and it's still there. I don't care enough to do anything else. Good luck with it, I think the 3800 is a piece of @#$^ personally.

First off, knowing about your mad oil leak, you may want to pull ALL of your plugs and see if any are blacked out real bad, seeing as how a valve cover leak is very probable, it's very probable a cylinder could be gettin some oil in it, but with the miles on there hard to tell, if it hasn't had a tune-up in a while, it could just need that, the gaps on the plugs could be bigger than your finger and that could just be the first plug to misfire more than parameters allow to set the light off, so i'd pull'em all and see!

92 - Thanks, yeah, I'll check them all. I thought about pulling them all tomorrow morning.
Chris - Isn't there a module that controls all the coil packs? Someone told me about that as a potential problem.

ignition control module. my mechanic said it didnt exhist. basically its the thing the coils are mounted to, it tells which coil to fire when (and both plugs on any firing coil fire at the same time) Waste spark system lol canadian guy learned something!! only because mine went bad.

I've never used Bosch platinums. I'm guessing I won't I drove the car the 90 miles home today, and the only time we got the misfire was when it was in O/D at about 60mph and the turnpike got hilly. Once under load on the uphill, it would start to stutter and the SES light flashed on. All I had to do was nudge the accelerator to kick it out of O/D, get the rpms up a bit, and then let off the gas and it would settle back down in O/D with no problem. So, I'm going to start with the plug and wire on #6, and then maybe the coil pack. If not, then it's on to the control module. The car was free, so a small investment wouldn't hurt, right?

Sounds like a coil to me! Try swapping two of your coils....then go drive and see if you get a misfire on another cylinder...that'd be the easiest/quickest way to be able to check

Spark plug boot shields, really? There's something I'd never even think to mess with.

I fixed a misfire on a 2000 GTP by swapping injectors and watching the misfire move to the cylinder i swapped the bad injector to. Just a thought, fuel delivery will also cause misfires.

I'll probably change the coils around. My friend was trying to convince me to check the ohms on each coil, but I really don't feel like shocking myself. Since I live... oh.... 2 minutes on foot from an Auto Zone (literally), I'll just swap the coils, stand on it to throw the code and then drive it the 15 seconds to Auto Zone and see if the code moves when the coil does.
Post Merge: August 16, 2010, 05:38:22 PM XTR, it could be fuel, but everyone seems to say how many problems there are with these coil packs that I think I'll start there.
Chris- I wouldn't have thought about the shields either. My father-in-law did change the wires and plugs when this problem started and that didn't help (I found this out late last night), so I'm down to coil, module or fuel.

Funny, my coils on my 95 Regal 3800 were at 217k when I decided to get the engine swap done, and they were perfectly fine. Regardless, if you need any coils, I have two spare sets I can sell you cheap.

Are they the same between the 3800 and the 3800 Series II?

Yes, they're exactly the same part numbers.
