It comes in many names; Parking pawl, parking pinion, and so forth. All you need to know is that its the biggest pain in my ass for the 150k+ miles I've owned this car.

It started with a vibrating noise felt in the shifter while going in reverse. I thought nothing of it and moved on. After a while, the car would not go into reverse unless you wiggled the shifter and kept it pressed down toward the N position. There's a bit of play in the shifter between gears, so this solved the problem for a while. A month later, you have to hold the shifter between R and N right before neutral in order to reverse, and one day after that, you can no longer go in reverse, neutral, or drive.

That rod is the problem.

There's a spring loaded end on a rod, with a cap at the tip of the rod. After some time, that cap for some strange reason pops off, so the spring loaded end is then sprung into your differential and your car won't get out of park. The solution is to replace that, which while being only a $30 part, requires you to drain your trans, drop your subframe, and take the side cover off the trans. Of course, this is assuming you can move your car, which is now stuck in park wherever you last left it.

I'll post my progress as I go along. Conveniently, this gives me a good opportunity to replace my oil pan gasket.

looks familiar from when I rebuilt my trans almost a year ago.

Parking Pawl is down there in the bottom, that holds the car in place

I hope you realize you will have to take off the chain, gears......

and also have to pull off the oil pump and valve body plate....in doing so, you'll need new gaskets....

good luck

.....wait a minute....the parking Pawl is on the opposite side of the trans(diff side).

what you are looking at is the gear selector Andrei.

should be simple....but time consuming to get to it.  Good luck getting those 4 Torx bolts loose...mine were stuck GOOD..albeit they were from the factory, IIRC, your trans has been out already.

I'm not quite understanding why i need to remove basically the entire innards of a transmission to remove the parking pawl rod. That end popped off, but its still stuck to the spring, so I can still pull it out. I did manage to move the car by spazzing shifter up and down the selections until it disengaged. I'm sure I could do something similar to get it to come out enough to remove it. That rod looks like it would slide right out once you get it off the shifter linkage plate. Unless you're telling me that everything there is covering the rod...

lol this word Pawl. its odd... i serviced a towbar (for towing a car behind a motorhome) and the piece in the bar that locks the arms out is called a locking pawl.

Here's the exact description from the bonneville forum:

Quote
Guys, sorry that I missed this thread. The park issue is a common problem and what has happened is the stop at the end of the parking rod has worn away, causing the spring loaded end to travel too far and stay engaged into the parking pawl. When you move the selector into neutral, it moves the end away from the pawl and you can drive the car. You must drop the cradle and remove the side cover to change the parking rod. You DO NOT have to remove the diff cover. Once you get the side cover off, all you need to do is remover the detent plate from the linkage shaft (15 MM nut) and take the plate and shaft out. Some people simply braze the end of the shaft to stop the actuator or you can replace the shaft with a new one. If the stop totally wears away, the car may get stuck in park in ALL gears.

Based on that, it sounds like I should just be able to disconnect the detent plate/shifter linkage plate and that should be the end of my troubles.

It is indeed odd. I've heard multiple uses. The exact term on Rockauto.com is "Parking Pawl Actuator."

well the word pawl in general. the locking pawl on a towbar is totally different than a parking pawl actuator. but the part the actuator acutates is called a locking pawl i bet, and locks the teeth of the output gears so that the car wont move. (maybe spin if it doesnt lock the diff)

Right, that's what I'm talking about. The rod I showed pictures of is the replacement part I have in front me. I didn't know exactly what that rod locked, so thanks for clarifying that for me. I'll knew in the future its the output gears.

well, i dont know if i would call it the output gears. but its my guess that it would lock the car in place by maybe locking the final drive gear in the transmission. i honestly have no idea. dont take my word as written gospel!!

you should be able to reach it w/ the side cover off....when you said parking pawl, I was thinking the thing down on the Diff side that actually holds your car in park...that's the parking pawl.

what you're taking about is the gear selector pawl IIRC

Well, yeah, the plate. I'm talking about the rod. The rod that goes in and out. The one I took a picture of on my keyboard and posted in the first post. lol. Damn you had me scared there for a second.

The job will probably be done by then. I'm dropping the subframe tomorrow so that I can access the side cover of the trans more easily. This will be a lot of fun...

But as far as the rod goes, it does seem from the pictures I've looked at that you can just pull it out. Looks like a very easy part to replace.

I'm lazy, I'd just swap my motor/trans on the whole subframe, fuck disassembling transmissions.

I can push my car about a foot forward and backwards when it's in park.

Fortunately, all it takes is dropping the subframe enough in order to allow enough clearance to remove the side cover. Past that its one nut and the rod is out.

Today I finished draining all fluids, replaced the trans filter, and dropped one side of the subframe on jackstands. The car should be done tomorrow. Pics to come....hopefully.
