My 3100 sounds a bit loud at the higher RPMs, like after 4K.  Nothing abnormal, but the car isn't exactly in it's prime anymore.

I run 5w30 like it says on the oil cap.  IIRC that's the best oil to use for all weather conditions.

What would be the bennefit (if any) running 10w30?  Would it make my engine run any quieter when I've got my foot planted on the gas?  I wish my car had more than 160hp so I didn't have to drive the bag off it as much as I do.

I ran 10W30 in my 94 GA's 3100 back when it was new (Mobil 1, no less) and I noticed the motor was noisier with the 10W30.  It kinda confused me at the time, since I always thought thicker oil would quiet down a noisy engine.  However, I've never run anything but 5W30 in the 60* V6's I've owned ever since.

Seeing as the cold weather is upon us, I don't see how it would hurt any to try 0W30 synthetic oil...

You could always use and additive like Lucas or something.

My mechanic always told me the difference between 5W and 10W-30 is so MINIMAL that there really is no difference or very very little if any.
I must admit, on startup, you can REALLY notice the difference between DINO and Synthetic oil especially in the winter months!

About to switch to 10w-30 in the Sonoma soon.

Yeah, there are some stupid people that come into work. A few days ago I walked in and I guess earlier in the day someone did an oil change on a KIA and put 10W-30 in it. The cap calls for 5W-30. The guy called back saying thats not what it gets and the car is running rough now. I was like, "Ok, come back and we'll put that in." he asked why we didn't do it the first time and I told him 10W-30 is the default when we write it up.

Honestly, people are fucking stupid. Like they guy with the 3800 Monte that told me since we put 5W-30 in his car ran "hot"

at the very least, you might try some bg moa (or whatever you desire).  that seemed to help when i put that in. if youre going to switch oils, i would switch to at least mobil 1 530 (maybe even amsoil or 0W30).    i dont hear anything now with amsoil 10W30

I use 5w30 synthetic in my Z34 and 10W30 synthetic in my TGP, along with AC delco filters on both. I would just stick with the manufacturer recommended viscosity.

Funny but related story:

My friend works at a shop, and told me about a guy wanting an oil change in his German POS.  He wanted the shop to use 1 quart of Lucas additive (like that 80 weight pancake syrup for your engine....a QUART) and 4 qts of 5w30.  Well the shop used 10w30 and the Lucas.  He said his car overheats with the "thicker 10w30".... nevermind the quart of goop you just wanted mixed in.... no  roll

doesn't the TGP call for 5w30 or is that just the NA 3.1s?

my 3.4 calls for 1030 (on the oil cap at least).  i dont mean the thick lucas stuff.  the moa isnt thick at all and its only .5 qt to 6 quarts, so its not that much anyway
