i had to remove the oil filter housing before i dropped the engine back in the Regal and i'm not sure what the gasket is called.  it's rectangular and goes in between the block and the "housing" that the oil filter spins onto.  anyone know the part #?

TIA

The one on the left?

Apparently it's only available with the timing chain cover gasket set.

Pt. no. FPGTCS45971 & TCS45971

Price:

Napa: $18.49
O'reilly: $13.99
Autozone: $11.99

yep that's it.  i tried NAPA, O'Reilly and Checker today and they couldn't get it (at least not separately).  i guess i'll buy the timing cover set.  at least it isn't expensive.  thanks!

oh yeah, anyone know if this gasket needs a thin coat of RTV or should i install it dry?

I wouldnt use any RTV or anything between the block and the gasket... but you could put a couple of dots of it if necessary to hold it in place.

if you are going to seal anything I would use a white pipe thread type sealant on the bolts to keep the oil from seeping through the threads and out.

EDIT: I always try to add a little of that to bolts that are torqued but not threadlocked, and especially ones that are in oil or coolant.

thanks!  i'll put it on dry then.  i just picked up the gasket set at O'Reilley's.

as for the bolts, i noticed that the bolts had some white thread sealant on them when i took them out, although they came out clean so i'm not sure if the bolt holes are blind or not yet.  if they are blind i'll probably use some loc-tite, if they go through coolant or oil i'll use some white pipe thread sealant.

be sure to put the pressure valve in correctly!!!  otherwise you will have zero oil pressure!

yes,  When I have helping my friend take apart the engine in his Intrigue, that whole thing shot out, so we didn't know which way it went in and had to guess... We guess wrong initially. lol

haha that sucks!  i just installed it a few minutes ago.  other than having to take the CV shaft out and spending a half hour cleaning the gasket surfaces it was pretty easy.  i installed mine with the spring on the engine side, and the flat surface of the 'button' facing the oil filter adapter.  i'm pretty sure that is the way it was.

That is the correct way.   You had to take the CV axle out though? We were able to get to it with the axle still on.  Although we had the car up on a lift...

there was just no way i could get my torque wrench in there with the axle in the way, not to mention more room for me to clean the surfaces.
