this morning i went out to start my car and all i got was a *click* and nothing else.  i tried again and it started right up.  it did it again at the convenience store i went to....thankfully it started up on the 2nd try; i was worried i was going to be stranded there.  i got home and looked underhood and found the problem - one of the wires going to the starter is totally fried.  the insulation has melted/split right off the wire and the braided wire itself looks blackened/charred.

it is the wire that goes to the larger terminal on the starter.  it looks like the wire starts as a heavier gauge red cable, but then a few inches before it gets to the starter it is spliced/shrinkwrapped into a smaller cable (which is the part that is fried).  is this a fuseable link or just plain wire?  what should i replace this section of wire with?  also, does this indicate my starter is bad or pulling too much current?

TIA

Could be a sign of the wiring going bad, or the starter going bad.

That small area is the fusable link.  That is what is suppose to fry and break apart in the even of trouble.  You need to get one that is specific for your car.

Josh, you might be able to find a suitable fusible link at a parts store to replace the old one with. The one on the car will be marked on the exterior to show what size it is(the surrounding insulation will make it appear larger than it actually is).

ok i think i found the problem.  i went out and tried to start it again when it was really cold (18*F right now) and my keyless entry didn't work.  the car had no juice at all.  i popped the hood and started wiggling that bad starter wire and still nothing.  then i just put my hand on the negative battery terminal and the lights came on smile  so hopefully all i need to do tomarrow is tighten that SOB.  not really sure how i'm going to tighten it yet with no tools, but i'll figure something out.  maybe my can opener will work lol.

still need to replace that wire of course but at least the car should be driveable for work tomarrow.

i should have some money after making tips tonight.  hopefully Domino's has some tools or another driver does so i can tighten that negative post real quick.  either that or i'll just stop by Advance and buy a 5/16" wrench after i take a few deliveries.  i'm driving up to Gillette tonight after work and i'll definately be bringing my tools back down with me  smile

i gotta replace the DP gasket tomarrow, that is gonna suck now that it's so damn cold out.  i might put my stock airbox in until next spring too.
