My cruise control isn't working correctly, the speedometer is jumping all over the place 0-? the transmission is continually trying to change gears because of it...what needs to be done and how hard is it to find the parts for the repair?
I have a 91 Cutlass Supreme international coupe w/the 3.1 V6
Can any one advise me?

the VSS?

It's location on top of the tranny on the passenger side of the car.  Look below the alternator there will be wires running to it.

It's been a number of years since I had to swap mine in my old car... but theres only like 2 screws or bolts that hold the sensor on, then pull it up.  I'm sure someone else will chime in (like 3100MPFI I know cause he told me years ago lol), but you can go and yank it out just be careful not to lose any parts.

***I have been waiting for over two weeks now for the shop to call me to bring it in for the repair, that's why I asked the forum if the parts are hard to find AND is this the real cause of my problem?***

I have no idea what's the problem with your car, but if you get in a junkyard you can yank out that VSS in like a minute lol.  Not sure if you even need to tilt the engine or not.  Lots of 91 cars (or early 90s cars with the same tranny) in the junkyard.

Thanks for the advise friend...I'll advise the forum when it's repaired as to what the end result was that corrected it.

I think the first thing you should check is your VACUUM LINES.  The cruise is vacuum controlled in your car.  If you have a vacuum leak, it will be constantly trying to ADJUST causing it to accelerate and decelerate continually.

The cruise servo is mounted to the drivers side strut tower.  There should be 2 vacuum lines coming off of it.  Make sure that one of them is attached to the lines that go underneath it (it will go into a T fitting).

With the cruise off, when you floor the car, does your AIR VENTS shut off?  If they do, that means you have a vacuum issue that needs to be addressed first.

***fANTASTIC thank you I didn't think that would be an issue. funny thing is that the speedo when it's jumping all over the dial will go from 0 to what the speed is if I even slightly touch the throtle? the transmission trying to change gears has me really worried***

hmm.  When the speedo jumps is that parked, or when you are driving?

The Cruise has several things that go in with it but the actual working is done with just a cable.

Does the car gears, and speedo jump around when normal driving?  Or only when you try to use the cruise?

When you activate the cruise, all it does is apply vacuum to the servo to hold the throttle cable in the SET position.  So if you have issues with anything else with the cruise ON, then it is a cruise problem, but if it does it all the time with the cruise off, you might have a MAJOR problem.

So to reiterate, does it do all of that when you are normal driving?

forgot to add.  There is a REALLY BIG interchange for parts.  You can get the VSS from just about ANY 1989-1992 CEVROLET, CADILLAC, BUICK, PONTIAC.  Just look for 4 speed automatics.  Easiest way to tell is look at the gear shift indicator.  If it has OVERDRIVE, it is a 4 speed, but cars like the Lumina will have 3 speeds.

You can also use just about any vacuum crise module or computer from 1988-1993.

WIth the VSS, if you end up needing that, you do NOT want to use 1988 (it is geared different), and starting in 1993, all of the trannys were the 4T60-E instead of the older 440T4 (they look the same, but the VSS is different).

***The speedo only jumps when the car is moving. the transmission is trying to jump gears at all times when in motion. and unfortunately with the cruise control turned off it still does it.***

***I've printed your comments out and will show them to the mechanic tomorrow morning, Monday the 23rd., thank you very much for your help, God I do hope I don't need a transmission, I've been told that could run up to $1500.00+ or more?***
