i am extremely frustrated right now at this damn oldsmobile 88..........After paying over 1300 overall with labour and parts for the intake replacement, opening the engine, reassembling the engine, buying parts (thermostat, starter etc..)...........THE DAMN THING BREAKS DOWN AGAIN!!!!!!!

This time, while my dad was driving, he said that the car jerked forwards as if the engine turned off, and the security light flashed on (or maybe remained lit), but yeah it was the security light. Seemed serious, so we took it to the dealer....no codes cuz its not a check engine light. A 100 dollars later.....the diagnostic showed that everything seemed ok, but the crank position sensor needed replacement....POSSIBLY being the cause....such a hassle.

We went to the mechanic bought the CPS, and he had to take off a pulley before he could access the CPS, i think this was the harmonic balancer, not sure......The thing wouldn't come off, so they used force or some tools, bending it, and now the car won't start........now we need to get a new harmonic balancer or w/e that pulley is. What is WRONG with my mechanic/car/GM..............this is utter bullshit for a 1998 vehicle with 130 thousand kilometers. Is this problem common? Was it misdiagnosed? What is the security light flashing for? What does the CPS have to do with jerking the car forwards while driving? What is a possible fix? Thanks guys......I dont know wtf to do anymore.

I'm sorry to hear all of your troubles. It reminds me of when I first bought my car, brought my car to the dealer, and paid assinine prices to fix simple stuff GM messed up on.

That all being said! You should ease yourself into doing some repairs yourself. Take it slow. It builds upon itself believe me. When I bought my car 4 years ago, I couldn't even wax it! Since then I've replaced tons of parts on it including the motor mounts this past week!

Unless your getting codes read, I would NEVER take it to the dealer again. All they managed to do was rip me off, and they still messed up my car like every other shop I've brought it to.

Either way, just my humble opinion. A lot of simple (but vital) parts seem to break on GM's for the right or wrong of it. Hope it all works out.
