hey y'all guess whos got another silly question about a silly car?
SofaKingRudeAndArrogant does.

this weekend i told my friend i could change the timing belt on her 2.0 DOHC and everything seems straight forward. but what im wondering is what do you guys use to remove the main pulley for the accessories on the crank with?

one idea a guy had was to let up the bolt a little, then with the wrench on it use a puller on the buttom edge of the pulley and hold the wrench so the puller doesnt turn the bolt while you turn the puller.
all i can say, is there HAS to be an easier way!!

haha done that myself, on the SOHC versions. Really your "suppose" to have a special beefy chrysler tool. But you need a small jaw puller, but a strong one. Youll stick the insert down the crank hole, and then use the little "edges" on the INNER part of the pully, pull there. I broke 2 pullers before i got it off finally. PAIN In the ass. DO NOT pull on the outside of the pully, or youll only destroy it! Hope you can get it

See the 3 inner edges?

its the insert part i didnt have! lol so i had to set the bolt for the puller on the back of the crank pulley bolt and just keep backing it off a little while im turning the puller. lol it came off with a cheap looking 3 jaw puller i bought for $35. i think i bent it a little but it came off in the end. biggrin   i was also having problems with the bolt being so tight the engine would just rotate instead of loosening. know what my old man told me to do? pull out the spark plugs and fill the cylinders up with water, put plugs back in. too much pressure to turn engine now he said.
uummmm lol i dont even want to know where this idea started. but theres NO way i wanted to take this road. lol

I actually cheated and used a Electric impact on the puller so the engine wouldnt spin, lol. Iv herd putting rope in a cylinder too to stop the engine

well, you could take off the flywheel inspection cover, jam somting in the teeth of the flywheel and hold the engine. Again rope in the cylinder, really the BEST is to use the impact gun till the bolt stops....

My MAC TOOLS (lol) impact gun (while wearing my Snap on hat) worked fine without blocking off the fly wheel or using a rope, but that rope idea isnt a bad one

anyhow. i got it finished then while test driving i noticed a few problems im not used to.
the engine shakes like crazy while waiting at red lights (not that crazy tho) and it misfires once every 2 mins or so while waiting at reds. but the girl that owns it said it did this before... so i mentioned plugs. she said it was done not long ago -by her mechanic who is also her friend. who wanted $700 for parts alone on the timing belt water pump change. i got them for $300.

Those neons have an awful problem with the motor mounts going bad and causing a ton of vibration at idle. The misfire could be the plug wires. Pull every one out, its pretty common for the tube seals to go bad, and fill those holes with oil and ruin the wires and cause a miss, somtimes on just 1 cylinder, the other 3 can be dry

i heard about those tube seals... well the chick that owns the car lives like 4 hours out of town, so i guess next time shes in ill swap those out, and maybe put in some new plugs and wires. the wire set cant be too expensive considering theyre like 6" at the longest. lol

yea its a 25$ wire set, just make sure to replace the valve cover gasket and those tube seals if it is leaking or it will just ruin the new wires!

i pulled out every plug wire just to look, they seem dry to me. there is no discoloration of the metal in those tube thinggies. these were all things i was told too. and the engine is running a little rough... she said it always has been. i thought it was cuz i skipped a tooth on the timing by accident, good thing she told me.
