GREAT TO FIND PEOPLE WITH SO MUCH PASSION FOR THERE CARS LIKE MYSELF.I HAVE A 1993 GRAND PRIX GTP 3.4 BRIGHT RED.I HAD THE ENGINE REPLACED 3 YEARS AGO WITH A JASPER REMAN 3.4.I WOULD LIKE SOME INFO ON THE LIFE EXPECTANCY OF THE ALTERNATOR .I OWNED IT FOR 11 YEARS AND IT SEEMS TO ME THAT THE ALTERNATOR LAST ABOUT 3 YEARS, I HAVE 2 JL AMPS A CAP AND 2 BATTERIES INSTALLED.I KNOW ABOUT THE DUCT WORK THAT CAME WITH THE CAR TO HELP KEEP IT COOL,I AM MISSING A PIECE OF THAT. I NEED THE SECTION THAT GOES AROUND THE ALTERNATOR.

IF ANY ONE HAS ANY INSIGHT TO THIS PROBLEM AND KNOWS WERE I CAN BUY THE PIECE PLEASE LET ME KNOW.THERE IS SO MUCH GOOD INFO ON THIS SIGHT I WISH I WOULD HAVE KNOWN ABOUT THIS YEARS AGO.

junk yard is your best bet i would say. ive had mine in for a year or so now and its never given me a prob. i run a single Clarion amp, no cap and 2 12" subs off of mine, plus a few other electronic goodies and still only use a single optima redtop.

If you do not idle for long periods in high temperatures with the  AC on, the alternator live a normal life. BTW with the AC on you always have one of the radiator fans on. When the engine gets hot enough the second fan switches on. The extra current helps heat up the solder joints in the alternator. To make it worse turn on your head lights too.  You can burn one up in 30 minutes at 110F. When I started taking the longer, slower but ALWAYS MOVING back roads home I quit burning them out.  You can look in the back of a cooked alternator and see the solder joints melted. That takes about 400 F.

YEAH I KNOW WHAT YOU ARE SAYING WITH THE A/C ON AND THE MUSIC BLASTING THAT ALTERNATOR GAUGE STARTS TO DIP PREETY LOW.DO YOU KNOW ABOUT THE DUCT WORK THAT DIRECTS THE AIR TO THE ALTERNATOR . THIS MORNING I FOUND OUT IT WAS THAT TIME AGAIN TIME FOR A NEW ONE AT ABOUT 400.00 A POP THAT HURTS THATS JUST NOT A JOB I WANT TO DO WITHOUT A LIFT ETC.
