One of the lights on my HVAC controls burnt out.  I have the 00-03 style which has 0-5 settings for the fan control, while newer ones (04-05 I think) have little dots (more then 5 settings).   So I'm wondering:

1.  What's involved with changing that lightbulb?  Is it a GM only part?

2.  Can I upgrade to the 04-05 HVAC controls (plug and play?)

ohhh, that little bulb, iv changed them on a few similar things. I usually have to carfully release the tabs holing the face of the unit on, and the blubs end up being solderd in half the time, so you just cut it out and solder a new one in, or you could get lucky and there just pop in pop out.

I can tell you right now that (2) isn't possible.  The entire control system was redesigned in 04.  Your car uses the classic "blower motor resistors" to regulate the fan speed, whereas 04-05's have an electronic module (that actually mounts in the same spot as the older models' blower resistor pack.)

As far as (1) goes, bbengineer of NAIOA fame offers an LED upgrade for our clusters:
