Hi, I'm currently located in Toronto, Canada, and I'm looking to put a cold air intake on a 1998 Oldsmobile Eighty Eight with the L36 (3800 Series II V6) because I really miss my Oldsmobile LSS with the L67 (3800 Series II Supercharged ) which was wrecked due to some insuranceless idiot on the road who ran a light. Anyways, I'm looking for a more throaty sound and a mild increase in power, and i found a cheap deal on eBay. The intake is for 15 dollars lol, and its a big cone filter with a shiny chromed pipe . I'm wondering how much worse that would be than the $400 flagship CAI from K&N my friend put on his Impala wiht the same engine. I'm not looking to spending a lot, I just want that V8 like sound and a bit more grunt. If anyone has experience with those cheap filters vs. the expensive K&N ones, please enlighten me, thanks

Ew, do not buy those cheap ass Ebay ones for $14.99. K&N's are way too expensive for me, I'd look into a Thrasher intake, WizAir intake, or look into a FWI from Speedbuilt.

Might be worth your while to make your own intake. I went with a $24.95 "PepBoys Ricer Special" cone filter, a chunk of 3" ABS pipe, a 45* elbow, and a 3" rubber coupler to make my fenderwell intake. It's going on 5 months since I installed it and I've been through some fairly large puddles with nary a hiccup. Pics of said FWI are here if you're curious. I installed the filter just behind the driver's side headlight where it draws in plenty of cold air. Not sure if you'd be able to do that on your Olds, but if not, you could always make it a warm-air intake...

Those cheapo cone filters *supposedly* don't flow worth a crap. Just something to keep in mind.

I doubt they filter worth a shit either. They don't. I've removed the intake tubing from a car that had one on it before and there was a ton of dust/dirty inside.

http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=230184121236&sspagename=ADME:X:RTQ:CA:11#ebayphotohostingI was thinking something like this which comes with an ORIGINAL K&N cone filter. I asked the dude if this will fit on a 1998 Oldsmobile Eighty Eight with the Series II 3800 V6, and he's like if your car is not in the description it wont fit. I doubt it since he mentions EVERY bonneville and EVERY grand prix regardless of whether they're L36 or L67....if it has that much flexibility, and i have the engine that those cars have, I think it should fit.....I've seen the engine bay on a grand prix, it looks almost identical.....what do you guys think?

eh, that's still a cheap intake in my opinion. The filter may be a genuine K&N, however it's still just chillin in the engine bay amongst all the hot engine air.

It looks decent enough. I bought one similar for my old Regal and it functioned just fine. Just know that you aren't going to experience any HP gains by having the filter under the hood like that. It will sound mean, however!

I'm just worried about fitment issues, because it'll cost about a 100 bucks total including shipping, which is quite a lot for a product you dont even know will fit on your car. If it can fit on a 1997 Grand Prix with an L36, it should fit on my 1998 Oldsmobile 88 LS with an L36 as well......according to my logic. The pic in the auction has a 3800 Series II with a diff engine cover than on my car, and that pipe for teh intake seems pretty long....i dont know if it'll hit that little black box or any other obstruction...any views on fitment? Thanks guys, I gotta be thorough before I convince my dad for this purchase lol there's a possibly disastrous outcome if it doesn't fit

If you're worried about fitment, head over to www.bonnevilleclub.com and see what they're using. Since Bonnevilles are the same car as your LSS.

i've got an APC filter (LOL) on the GP...i just lathered it up w/ lots of K&N oil and after 10k miles, still no dust or anything inside the intake tube.....and i'd see it if there was, the tube is PC'd bright white.
