Found out this morning as I was going to work.  The fuel pump is completely DEAD!
I didn't get lucky like I did with my Bonnie, which the pump got weak when it warmed up. Grrrr!!

I'm glad that GM decided to put an access panel to the pump in the trunk though!! It sure would suck having to drop the fuel tank onto the street (my car is in the exact spot you see in my sig..), as I'm sure the police would be called if I did it. haha.

I hope to pull the sending unit tomorrow and replace the pump.  I would like to have my car back on the road by Friday.

Yep, just sharing my bad luck of the day.

Well, if seems that this ordeal has turned into a little project!

I got a free Walbro fuel pump from a co-worker. He told me it's rated at 170lph @ 55psi.  Plenty for what I need.

Yay!

This would be a simple swap, but my fuel canister has a venturi pump in the bottom to pull fuel out of the tank into the canister.  The venturi setup works very well to empty the tank completely.  Anyway, The problem with the Walbro pump is there is no fuel outlet for the venturi pump hose.  The typical way people have fixed this problem is to either put a 'T' into the main fuel line, or do away with the venturi setup all together and cut out the bottom of the canister to allow fuel to get to the pump...

I don't like either way.  The Walbro does have a pressure relief port on the top and there is an after market fuel pump (racetronix pump), who modify the walbro pump to allow usage of the factory venturi pump. I believe they turn the pressure relief port into the venturi pump outlet.  Sooooo I'm simply going to do this myself.

Tonight I removed the retainer that holds the pressure relief spring and ball in place.

Here's the ball and the spring. I don't have a pic of the retainer because it shot out somewhere once it got loose. lol

I plan to epoxy the venturi line into this port tomorrow, like this..

Then all I need to do is change the terminals on the factory pump harness to the style the walbro pump needs, and it's time to install!!

Also, does anyone know what this thing does?  I'm kinda thinking it's for electronic noise suppression, but I'm not sure.

She's back up and running!!!  I believe the venturi pump is working properly as I have 1/4 tank of gas and the engine won't cut out at WOT.  I'm going to drive it to a friend house here soon, so I'll know if it's not working. lol

I have a couple pics from today.  I'll post them up later tonight or tomorrow.

Thanks.

When I was researching what other people have done with the Walbro pumps, I saw the racetronix pumps brought up everytime, and with good reviews too.

Interesting info on the Walbro pump.  I've never got a chance (yet anyway) to change a pump on a 2G, but it sure looks to be a hell of alot easier than the shit I went through changing out the pump on my old GM's (93 Cavalier and 96 Lumina.)

2nd gen's are EASY to get the pumps out.  Took me about 10 minutes to remove the pump and another 10 to put it back in!

Here are the pictures as promised!

I Pulled the brass venturi pump fitting out of the stock pump and epoxied it into the the Walbro pump.

And here's a picture of the Walbro pump installed in the factory canister.
