my friend wants me to come down and fix her 91 Grand Prix 4 door. It got numerous issues, but i think I know how to fix them. But one has be alittle curious as to the issue

The wipers collide! the blades run into eachother. Would this issue be linkage bent or worn out? Or just an adjustment, or does somthing need replaced like the wiper motor?

motor itself would not cause it.  It would be either linkage, or (most common), the wrong size wiper blades (the ones being too long could cause the tops of one to hit the bottom of the other).

stock size calls for a 20 inch wiper blade.  I normally run a 22 inch (yes it works).  On my gold car, I was able to run a 24 without it hitting, but 1988 is a little different (has a slightly reshaped firewall that was only that way in 1988).

I just got new blades for my 1994 vert, and they are 22's.  That would be the first thing I would check (they measure 21.5)

Is the linkage adjustable? just pull the cowl and adjust, try adjust try till it works?

i'm not sure.  I know my 1988 was not adjustable.  Never looked at any other year.

If it is not the wrong size wipers, then pull the cowl to see if any of the linkage parts are bent.  She could have had that happen and never know it.  I have seen that happen in a friend of mine's truck.

With the w-bodies, every one that I have seen, nothing has really been adjustable, but I have seen some weird things happen.

well, first you need to see what is wrong.  No need replacing it all if it is a simple fix.

If you do need to replace the whole thing, it is not too bad to do.  Just take the covers off, the bolts, and the connector.  You have to kinda rotate the assembly to get it out from under the windshield glass.

I think you can use as new as 1997 (cutlass supreme) assembly.  All of the Gen 1 w-bodies are the same with potentially 1988 being the only year that is different (I have seen some of the strangest things being different in that car).

forgot to add, I have heard (but not confirmed) that the way the wipers attach to the 1997 Cutlass Supreme is different (old style is the peg, but the newer is the hooks).  If you get a newer linkage setup (you can reuse your wiper arms), and take the arms as well, make sure that she will not have problems later on getting new wipers.

My car use to do that, the bolt for the wiper arm was loose. I adjusted the arm and tightened it and it's been good ever since.
