On my 97 2-door Cutlass with the 3.1, there is a cable with a large connector in the middle between the air box and windshield washer. It runs from the firewall down towards the trans. Im guessing its the speedometer cable, but its always in the way.

yeah, there's no speedo cable in a W, it's all electrical.
it does sound like the shifter cable.

if it connects to the transmission im going to say shifter linkage. its an auto? where is the shifter? column or center?

I guess my beef is that I like a clean engine bat and the connector in the middle of t6he cable is right beside the air cleaner is the size of a golf ball.
