My 3.8 1999 ltz had oil light come on. Full of Mobil 1. Didn't run hot. Drove it home. No clatter. No problem. I am hoping oil pressure switch. Is this common with 135k?

Will try and change out switch as its cheap and hope that's what it is.

Do you have a oil gauge? When my oil switch was going bad the light and oil gauge weren't working correctly.

94,

No only a oil pressure light and an oil level light. Oil pressure cam on. I definitely have no leaks. Using Mobil 1 in the thing.

I wonder if the coolant leak from the leaking upper plenum could have messed up the thing. I did see coolant in the block when I drained it. It waxed the coolant level sensor. I have been driving for a few months with no issues. Anyway. Will get on some ramps and make sure a wire didnt come loose and if not, pull the switch and replace. My Lumina manual shows it along the front right of the oil pan. I hope thats all there is. Like the car a bunch.

Did they make a gauge package for a 1999 Lumina? Before this I was only interested in factory driving lights which apparently don't exist unless BUick or Olds can be used. Hopefully this is a simple fix.

I'm not sure if they have an optional gauge package for the Lumina. The switch is what sends you the oil pressure signal, the oil level light I believe is a separate sensor.

The location you mentioned is the right spot and they are pretty easy to change out.

Picking up an AC Delco switch Saturday. I fired the car up and the light is out. Oil is clean and full. I guess a safe bet would be screw a mechanical unit in and test. I don't recall if I have one but may grab one and try it for peace of mind.

I finally changed the switch. After looking at the 3.1 instead of the 3.8 engine in the GM manual (duh), I saw it by the oil filter. If you want to change one, it's no bad but suggest getting the car up high enough to work on. Turn  the wheel to the left and remove the oil filter. It isn't bad as long as you have one of the oil sensor sockets, a short extension and a ratchet. The power steering hose is a bit of a nuisance and you have to move it out of the way.

After a new filter, oil and sending unit, the light has stayed off.

There's the digital and analog 9C1 cluster, but neither come with oil pressure gauges.

Chris,

Thanks for the reply. I have the GM manuals and don't see anything. I was hoping maybe to find a junked police car and thought maybe it had oil and a transmission temp in the cluster and maybe a 140 MPH speedo although I wouldn't drive it that fast. I actually drive like an old woman. ;-)

A thread hijack ---- Once the weekends get nicer I plan to head to the salvage yards and look for a few odds and ends. LTZ/Z34 front bumper cover, some plastic odds and ends under the hood. I need a rolling code Home-link but you can find those on eBay. My old one that I installed doesn't work with the new openers. That is an easy mod by the way. I probably should have placed mine in a visor but placed it in the headliner. With the LTZ, you don't have but a couple of places to put something like that.

At least the sending unit apparently was the problem and with 5 quarts of Mobil-1 the problem hasn't reappeared.

I use to drive an '87 Caprice 9C1, there was a bunch of cool stuff in that car the repair manuals didn't cover and GM didn't "know" about. Finding parts was such a PITA at times, especially when it came to the electrical system.

I had a coworker that bought crown vics al the time. Nice loaded cars. He would go to the salvage yard and grab the police stuff off of old ones and put in his. speedo, spot light, other stuff. His cars were really nice.
