A little over a year ago I had this death like smell in my car. It was absolutly unbearable. I couldn't drive the car. It stunk so bad I could puke if i were to stay in the car. The stinch was a 10 out of a 10.

So I stopped driving the car for a month and the smell started to go away. When I would turn the fan on the smell would increase 10 fold. So I knew that the smell was somewhere in the air vent system. I then removed the fan(squirrel cage) and it was empty. I kept the fan out so no air would flow through. Thus no smell anymore. Phew. But when I would take compressed air to the air vent that nasty smell would come out again. So that sucker is still in there dried up.

To this day I have not found that dead THING. I removed the dash last week. Today I removed the heater core and the EVAP and it isn't in the evap. Where could it of gone? I don't see anywhere It could of gone past the EVAP. It is nowhere to be found? Any suggestions?

Here u can see the firewall where we had to remove the wiring harness and backing plate to allow the evap to fall out

Here is a picture of the evap. Clean as a whistle. Where could that SOB have gone? Dead mice can't move right?

Here is a pic of the old heater core.

in the vent in the floor that goes to the back seat?

i mean,  its dead and dry now,  probably equivalent to really dry jerky with fur and bones.  probably won't do anything else.

U caught my curiousity. Tell me more about this vent in the floor that goes to the back seat.

That vent brings air from the backseat/floor to the vent system that blows in my face right? IDK if this sounds crazy but i have a memory of the smell not coming out of the defrosting vent under the windshield.

Oh and check this out, right when the problem initially happened a puddle of water formed on my windshield in the cabin. It was huge, roughly 12" in diameter. It was like mass condensation on one spot???? That happened after parking my car in the grass for 3 hours on a sunny day.

the thing runs from the bottom of the heater box back down the middle i think(its been a while) and then splits to each side and has visible exits behind the front seats in the middle of each

I dunno about ALL, but my GPs have had it so yours does too.  You might wanna take the center console out and it goes down into the floor... thought you would have seen the duct since you took the heatercore out ???

Thanks for the arrow. So air comes up from that out of the vents right? I dont' see how. The smell amplifies X 10 out the upper vents.

I don't see how much air actually gets out of those vents under the seats.  They're stupid IMO, and when I take my center console out next time I'm gonna block it off (by the heatercore) with some duct tape or something.  That way I'll get more heat by my feet.

If you've ever driven around with the heatercore cover OFF you'll know how much heat is produced around that area without the fans on or anything.  And heat travels UP.

Again does air from the lower duct make its way to the upper vents?

What about the AC thing that looks like a heater core? I've seen those things get covered in shit over the years. Maybe yours is dirty and needs to be cleaned?

It looks like a mini radiator.

That would be the evaporator core  .  Those suckers plugging up is a quite common problem for many GM's...

Yeah, I gotta assume that that is what's causing the musty, mildew smell in my sisters car. It's gotten to the point that I sneeze. Isn't that why they started putting cabin air filters in?

Bombshell, I don't think the floorvents get the upper vents, but I could be wrong.

Your right. It just blows air under the front bucket seats and thats it. Update, i installed the heater core and put the evaperator back in. Still no mouse.  The smell blew out of the upper vents. So if the mouse isn't in the squirrel cage, evap, t hen it has to be in the vent system. I only had about 30 minutes today to work on it. And I only have time on thursdays to work on it. So next thursday i'm going to blow air through the dash in an attempt to find the mouse. Then i'll install the dash.
