Alright... do all W bodies have this same power lock system or is it just the GP? Cuz it has to be the stupidest design on earth. I locked my keys in my car just about an hour ago. It was running with the headlights on and in reverse when i did it. Luckily the local police were happy to come unlock my door for me.
I was checking my lights which i like to do regularly. I checked the headlights, turnsignals, brake lights... now i was gonna check the back up lights. I did that by setting the parking brake (on a level surface) jamming the brakes on and putting it in reverse. I got out and closed the door to check the lights... forgetting that my car automatically locks the doors when taken out of park. My windows were all closed. This resulted in the aforementioned situation. WHY? Why not do like Chrysler did (as much as I hate Chrysler, i must admit i like this) and make them automatically lock at 15 mph instead of instantly when taken out of park? Does this aggravate anyone else?

I think there's a fuse you can remove to disable the auto locking on the older (non BCM-equipped)GM's, which would include the 1G and 1.5G W-Bodies.
The GM's that have a BCM allow you to change the auto locking settings. On my old Malibu, you held down the driver's side power lock button for 10 seconds and you could select how the locks auto-locked by the number of times you pressed down on the button (it would beep once for setting #1, twice for #2, etc.)
On my 04 Impala, it's changed through the radio. On the 07 it's changed via the driver info center in the dash.
IIRC, the settings are:
1.) Auto Lock OFF/Auto Unlock OFF 2.) Auto Lock ON/Auto Unlock OFF 3.) Auto Lock ON/Auto Unlock ON for Driver's door only 4.) Auto Lock ON/Auto Unlock ON for all doors

CUT THE BLACK WIRE. no, seriously. find your chime module. on a 95 it is located on the column support bracket above the accelorator pedal. there is a wire connector that comes off of that. if you unplug it you disable the auto-locks. BUT if you snip the all black wire you will modify it's functioning such that the auto locks work, but only once you exceed 10 mph. better and safer!

If I do that will my door alarm and headlight alarm still work properly? yes. it only affects the module, and not other functions. try unplugging the module first if you want to be really certain. READ: Yeah. My 1988 Cutlass Supreme, and my 1990 STE are done so they lock at 10 MPH. Locate the chime module and cut wire C2-D (orange/black). That is the PARK/NEUTRAL signal. In my new module, I think it is a BLACK/WHITE wire but that is the proper location. If you disable the park/neutral wire, then it will lock when you hit 10 MPH instead. hey! do you remember something about disabling the automatic door locks on one of your cars, as I recall, instead of locking when placed in gear... it locks one moving over a certain speed?
can you tell me about that and how to do it? wire colors can vary! check by position!

Sometimes you forget your keys or your lights, it happens. That's why there's an alarm. I wasn't planning on being out there long and my driver's window is a pain to put up and down because it keeps coming off the track. And... I didn't know ANY W's had automatic headlights. If mine does, i don't know how to use them. The only cars I know with automatic headlights were our old 87 Grand Marquis, the 98 S10 we have at work, and my neighbor's Alero.

how to use them? its easy, you do nothing. lol the lights come on in the dark (with no park brake on) and off in the light (when the ignition is on)
ive yet to use the headlight switch while on the road for either of my 91 Ws. the Lumi or the Buick, especially the buick... man that was a way better car than the lumi. :S oh well.

Hm. Either the Grand Prix doesn't have auto or I've never noticed. I almost always set my parking brake though.

I just checked my owner's manual. That was a Canada only thing. It worked with the Daytime Running Lamps. DRLs would not become standard in the US for a few more years.

thats fawked... i would hate to have to use my headlight switch... ya know do those things go bad? i bet a guy could make a killing off selling canadian ones in the states!
do you have a little circle thinggy on your left dash speaker cover? (even if there is no speaker there there should be a cloth cover part) and if theres a plastic circle in it with a hole, thats the sensor for the headlights. *i found this out when i took the dashpad off my buick and didnt notice that piece when i put it back together and the headlights were always on (i had dropped it somewhere behind the cluster or something)

Only Canadian first gen Ws have automatic headlights. Taylor (3100MPFI) has added them to some of his cars. I plan to add them to my S10. I already added the chime module from a 1994 W in my S10, the doors lock at 9 MPH, it dings if I leave my turn signal on too long and the chime module itself has a more updated sound than the original S10 chime if that makes sense.

What year S10? I thought all S10s made after 97 had auto headlights. The '98 we have at my store and the 2 '02 S10s we have elsewhere in the company all have automatic headlights, and they are pretty bare (only options they have is automatic transmission and A/C).
