he was trying to recharge it with one of those canadian tire kits (after releasing all the old gas into the air) i could get the compressor to engage if i bypassed the relay with a wire or something, but the relay was good i tested it with a battery. the light comes on inside saying the ac is on though too... someone once told me it somehow ties in to the power steering?!?! i was baked and cant remember that explanation tho

Terrible idea. You really need to get the orifice tube replaced whenever you service an A/C system. The damn thing is like $1.50. Also, you need to find out why it stopped working. If there's a leak, fix it, or it will happen again.

The proper way to do it is to have the system vacuumed out with a vacuum pump so that when you fill it up again, it will be mostly freon, instead of freon + whatever air was in there before, which can cause other problems.

The  compressor won't run if it senses a high pressure situation in the steering rack (like if you locked your steering wheel in one direction). I know this because my high pressure switch rotted off the car and my A/C stopped working. Solution? Unplug the switch.

No, it's there for a reason. You notice how if you're at a stop, in drive, and turn the steering full lock your car's idle drops? Now add the compressor to that engine load and you've got yourself a stalled car.
