My 91 olds cutlass wont switch the air vents between upper or lower. I disconected the vaccum arm so I can flip it to upper by hand. When i use the switch on the dash I can see it retreat back into the vacuun box?? But it will not push up. There is also another similar looking arm and vacuum box also but I dont know what it is. I cant move it by hand nor does it budge at any dash button. Its not a fuse that I can find. Is there a hose coming from the engine side. Is this an electronic vacuum? I see where the vacuum line goes to a small strip under the dash. All looks clean. It was slamming open and closed quite loudly when it worked. Then it just stopped! Any clues, tips greatly appreciated. Thanks

There is a plastic spherical vacuum accumulator down close to the battery. The line that runs from it back to the firewall has a sorry little $3 plastic check valve that is destroyed by vacuum. That is, the check valve is evaporated from the inside out. It will look normal on the outside but will have a pin holes if you smash it with a hammer. Replace this valve and make sure the vacuum line is not rotten. Your door should quit blowing cold air on the windshield. Oh yeah make sure you get the check valve installed pointing the right direction. You can test the system with a vacuum pulled on a old pressure tank. The leak is not loud enough to hear with a vacuum pump running or with the engine running. I have had this valve and vacuum line cause this problem on my 92 Z-34 4 or 5 times. If you determine that it is the check valve just buy two and store one for future use. I think it is a dealer only part.

Thanks. I found out the line near the battery to the Vacuum ball had cracked apart.I dead ennded it first and it worked . Then i looked a little further and just spliced the lines back together. Ill look for a replacement line but for now Im riding cool. Thanks for the info.

Cool. A friend of mine used to live in Bastrop, which is more to the south of Austin.

can't say I see too many Z34s around. I found a 5 speed car once in Liberty Hill but it's probably long gone...

My Z34 is not being driven because it is too hot to work on it now. It has an oil leak and a few other PIA things to take care of. Other than that it still runs great. Have not seen another in 3 or 4 years.

Seen 2 red ones in the past year. Both on Burnet Rd. One was a 5 speed car at the McDs with out of state plates.
Found a black one at a yard in Del Valle.
And I don't get out much...hahaha
It's so nice to have a swamp cooler in my garage......Well, it was until the wife took it. hahaha

I was living at 620/183 for a while, was a senior mechanic at the Firestone at 183/Anderson Mill and I ran the Brake Check on 183 ;-) Now i'm up in temple!
