I've had it break 2 times now, and at this point I'm just ready to leave it and be and use a pliers to open the hood. Anyone got pointers on how to fix it, and fix it good so this doesn't happen again.

Well the answer to the "fix it good" part is to keep the hood latch and release cable lubricated.  Hit 'em up with some spray lube that contains silicone or teflon once or twice a year and you'll never worry about snapping your release handle...
