Sooo really how common was it for these 2.8/3.1 engines to flatten out a cam? Iv got some bad clacking from the lifters and im starting to notice power loss, and its running rough, almost like its missing at idle. Its getting worse and worse. I put plugs and wires didnt make a difference. I dont know what i should do. Engines got 240k. But i had done headgaskets, and the cylinder walls and insides looked like new. But i had one lifter that was in pieces, i replaced it at the time, and it was quiet for while, now its gettin bad. Im wondering, can i just throw a set of lifters in and hope for the best, or have these bad lifters destroyed my cam and it would just ruin the cam to throw new lifters in? I can do lifters for 100 bucks, cam is another 100 bucks if i want to do that, but then id have to replace the bearings and i dont have the tools for that. uhg....

If you're going to tear it down to do the lifters, I'd put a performance cam in there. Summitt use to carry some for the 3.1, but I haven't checked in a few years. My old old old Lumina had an aftermarket cam because the guy used the car to tow a trailer about 15x the size of it. It actually did make a difference. My red Lumina was a freaking turd compared to my old one.

well its done. I used the old cam, looked good. Put new lifters, pushrods, rockers, and rocker balls and its damn quiet now, I love it!
