Came across a Toro at the j/y this past week-end with heated mirror. Is it just the drivers side mirror that is heated? Didn't see the "HEATED" on the passenger side mirror so it didn't occur to me to check closer The mirror head was knocked off the door mount and dangling by the wires. Luckily, the mirror glass was perfect, so I popped it out and cut the 2 black wires attached to the back of it with about 4 inches of wire to work with. It attaches to the power mirror motor inside the mirror head the same as the unheated glass in my '95 vert, so I'd like to intsall it and get it working. Besides needing an on/off switch, what else is involved? Thanks for any and all help.

Should be an auto on function, or on with ignition?

depends on the weather, but with a switch its probably the best idea.... but in all honesty, ive seen cars with heated mirrors but never seen a switch for it... shit some of the volvos and VWs we get at our shop have fucking reverse fog lights for fucks sake!!

Thanks all. Connecting to the rear window defog switch is what I was thinking. Does anyone know if the Toro passenger mirror is also heated?

no, the toro passenger mirror is not heated. When I did it to my 1988 Cutlass I wired it in to the rear defroster timer. One thing though. Put a 5V circuit breaker in line between the power for the defroster timer, and the mirror, or you will blow up your timer.
Also, do NOT ground it to your power mirrors switch ground. If you do, when the rear defroster is on, the power mirrors will not work. Been there done that >.<

I did the heated mirror thing a long time ago (5 or 6 years), but never posted. Decided I was going to keep that one to myself until someone else noticed the similarity of the toronado mirror.

I know it can be hard to give up little tricks like this you've discovered, so I greatly appreciate you coming foward with the added info and heads up. Since I'm not real knowledgable on electrical and wiring and don't want to screw it up, can I get some further info? Both wires on the mirror are black. Does it matter which is powered and which is grounded? What did you ground the mirror to? How did you tie into the timer? Again, thanks a bunch.

does not matter which wire you power and which you ground. I would just ground it to the body of the car.
As for the timer, I can't really remember which wire I spliced into for that one. Been a long time. If I can dig up my old service manual, I will see where I added it. I know I made some notes in it about it.

Thank you again. If you don't come across that, I should be able to figure it out using a light tester. With the ignition on, there should be one wire giving the temp control unit power? Then by turning the rear window defrost on, the next wire to show power should be the one to splice into?
