Simple Green does wonders! This is my 90' Pontiac 6000 I cleaned up. 1:1 Dilution, a scrub brush, and dash protectant.
I also powder coated some stuff the day before that, so it cools cool too!

One of the things I found made a difference was to take out the coolant reservour and clean the inside of it.  Dirty reservour hurts the rest of the bay.

ok, so i have discovered that my coolant resovoir is held in by the sole good grace of gravity... is this normal? there are two bolts at the bottom it kindof snaps onto, and a plastic ring around the top, similar to the little sampler bottles that come with the 40s.... shouldnt it be a little more held in than this?

No, i wouldnt wash my motor running.... MAYBE the pullies and stuff, but i dunno. i wouldnt wanna hit a running alternator... i think it would toast itself.

Somethings to concider are covering Distrubuters, and coils, and blowing them off with an air pistol before starting...
other than that, should be ok.

On some engines (mostly OHC engines... non-GM) might have problems with water getting in the spark plugs etc, so when the engine is running it stops water from sinking in.  But on any modern GM engine (except possibly the 3.4DOHC now sure) I've never had any problems.

I've sprayed down my Lumina's engine bay and my GP's bay with a pressure washer with no problems.
