Hello -
I am new to the site so please bear with me. The other day I had a mishap in the snow and smashed a rim by sliding into a curb. So I replaced the alloy with one from the junkyard, but now I'm noticing a rubbing/grinding noise coming from the wheel that hit the curb. I can also feel vibration through the gas pedal. It usually doesn't become noticeable until 45mph and above, but when I apply the brakes enough to stop the rubbing/grinding sound goes away. Also, if I apply the brakes at higher speeds the car shimmies and I'm thinking that might be warped rotors. Other than the shimmy at higher speeds handling hasn't been affected. I'm already planning on replacing the brakes up front when I have some money to buy decent parts. I'm not worried about decreased stopping ability yet, because I haven't heard the wear indicators yet.
Is there anything specific I should look for? I'm learning to do my own maintenance so layman's terms would be preferable.

things that are lose. jack it up (by the body) and give the wheel some wiggles grabbing it from opposite sides, do it a few different directions (or just verticaclly and horizontaly) and spin the wheel and listen for odd noises, grab some suspension arms and try wiggling them (make sure the car is stable so it doesnt fall on you -jack stands are good, but a hoist is better. look for places in the wheel well where the tire is making contact, they will be easily spoted by the lack of snow/dirt/paint
take pics!

Some of those symptoms sound like a bent wheel. Others sound like a bad wheelbearing... Like sofa suggested, see if you have any play in that wheel. If you hit the curb hard enough to break a wheel, you could have hurt a whole bunch more.

Hello all -
I haven't been ignoring you, but today was the first day it's been warm enough to jack up the car and try a few things. It got up to 25 degrees F. Anyway I got the tire off the ground and tried to find some play by pushing on the top and bottom of the wheel and there was none. I tried going side to side and there was no play. The wheel tried to turn as if the car was moving but stopped within about 2 inches since the other wheel was still on the ground. I took the tire wheel off to see if I could spot anything that was bent or unusual and didn't notice anything (then again since I'm still learning I may not have know exactly what to look for). I looked at the inside of the wheel and there doesn't appear to be any areas where the wheel/suspension components are making contact. If I hold the steering wheel dead center the noise more or less stops, but the car tracks to the right.
I'm hoping my responses aren't so vague that I'm confusing people. If you need me to take pictures I finally got a card in my phone so I can save pictures and then transfer them to my computer and then upload them.
Thank you all in advance for any help and thank you for dealing with a mechanical knucklehead.

youve got a bent something, and really you arent trying to flex the wheel justsorta jiggle it and see if it wiggles, not really moves.

Nothing was jiggling or moving in any way. All was as it would be normally. I took the wheel off to try to re-seat it in case I had it on crooked and that didn't do anything.

I've always told my friends that a car was the perfect girlfriend, because, "You can beat the hell out of her and stick your foot in her ass without being arrested for abuse."

Well, I see two new quotes in this thread...
It really sounds like a wheel bearing to me, and you knocked the steering rack out of alignment. I had bad wheel bearings on my car, and they weren't loose at all but made a noticeable humming noise. I'd take it to a shop and have someone check it out, just have them tell you what's wrong with it.
